The diverse landscapes of Nyungwe offer exciting hiking opportunities. Some of the trails include;
Congo Nile Divide Trail: The 227km trail traverses the watershed of the two Africa’s great Rivers namely; River Nile and River Congo. This is a long trail and takes a couple of days to accomplish. The foot trekkers and the bikers are provided for but driving can also be done. Camp sites for overnight exist along the trail while the shops from which the trekkers can purchase drinks and eats are also available.
Igishigishigi Trail: This is 2.1km in length offering remarkable views of the canopy and the wild flowers. This can be combined with the longer Umuyove or Imbaraga trails if the visitors wish to spend long in the forest.
Karamba Trail: This presents a moderately easy hiking encounter taking you to the former goldmine site, army camp and the market. It offers good birding opportunities and sights of various fern trees.
Umugote Trail: The Umugote trail offers impressive views of the ridges, flowers, and rainforests not forgetting Kibira Forest National Park in Burundi on a clear day. The trail offers high possibilities for birding and primate watching.
Umuyove Trail: The Umuyove trail is also referred to as Mahogany Trail presenting an opportunity of relaxing by the waterfall, trekking through some of the tallest trees in the park amidst good scent of beautiful leaves and flowers. It also offers access to a range of trails that are used during the Chimpanzee trekking.
Uwinka Trail: This is one of the challenging trails but offers rewarding early morning bird calls.
Irebero Trail: The Irebero trail loops around the park’s two (2) highest peaks offering views of Lake Kivu – the largest lake in Rwanda.
Imbaraga Trail: The Imbaraga is a long trail close to 10km and thus good for experienced hikers. It presents views of the four (4) waterfalls.
Bigugu Trail: The Bigugu trail takes you to the highest peak in Nyungwe Forest National Park and once at the peak (2950m), one can enjoy the sights of Lake Kivu and its Islands on the side of Democratic Republic of Congo. It is about 7km and takes 6 hours to finish.
Isumo Trail: The Isumo trail traverses the lush tea estates, the steep rain forest ravines along with the Nyungwe Park’s biggest waterfall. Isumo trail is 10.6km in length and lasts approximately four (4) hours.
Kamiranzovu Trail: The Kamiranzovu trail passes through Kamiranzovu marsh which is large swamp and a significant watershed. It presents a moderately difficult hike stretching to 6km about 3 hours presenting impressive sights of Orchids mainly during rainy seasons (Oct & Nov, April & May).
Ngabwe Trail: The Ngabwe trail stretch to 4.7km about 3 hours traversing various vegetation zones but can as well extend to include the Katabi tea Plantation lasting 8 hours. It offers possible sights of Colobus Monkey, Silver monkey and L’hoest Monkey.
