Chimpanzees also known as Chimps together with the Bonobos are the two species of Pan Genus and along with the Gorillas, they form the only species of Great Apes that currently exist on the continent of Africa. Chimpanzees are recorded to be native to the Sub Saharan Africa.
Unlike the Bonobos that are more peaceful, gracile and dominated by females, the Chimpanzees are more aggressive, larger and dominated by males. The hair of Chimpanzees is black or brown and the two sexes differ in appearance and size. They consume majorly fruit but they also eat bark, vegetation, insects and honey.
Chimpanzees are known to be very intelligent with capacity to use sophisticated tools. They thrive in much forested areas of tropical Africa. The arms of the Chimpanzees are noted to be longer than their legs and a normal male Chimp can rise to 1.2m in height and 91kg in weight. The chimps apply knuckle walking and can as well walk upright on two legs while carrying objects in their arms. The Chimpanzees have no tails while the palms of the hands, face, fingers and the feet soles are hairless.
Chimpanzees live in communities with many males and females enjoying good social interaction. The dominant male is called the Alpha male and undertakes the control of the group. Regarding aggression, it can be noted that mature male chimpanzees are highly territorial and very aggressive. They can even kill other Chimpanzees. The alpha male might not be the strongest male chimp in the community but rather the most canning and political. Besides protecting the community from external invasion and internal bickering among the individuals, the alpha male also spends its time grooming the other young males in the community. Chimpanzees reach puberty stage between 10-12 years and an adult female can produce between 4-6 babies throughout their lifetime. The chimps sleep in a different nest everyday which they build using a tree branches, twigs and leaves. Chimpanzees have a life span of up to 40 years in their natural habitat, this can increase to up to 50 years of age in captivity. The chimps have a gestation period of 8 months.
